Hang on for the Kindle 4 or Grab a Bargain Kindle 3?
There seem to be some signs that the ebook reader market may see the launch of the Amazon Kindle 4 at some point in the next few weeks. The last few weeks have certainly been busy. First Barnes and Noble made some very significant improvements to their Nook reader and launched the new Nook Touch, and then, just a fortnight later, iRiver launched the Story HD reader – the first reader to be fully compatible with the Google ebook store.
Many people have been wondering how Amazon would respond and, although there has been no official announcement regarding the Kindle 4, the fact that Amazon has dropped the price of refurbished Kindle 3 readers is being taken as a signal that the Kindle 4 may be here soon.
The last time that Amazon cut the price for refurbished readers was last year, just 4 weeks before the Kindle 2.0 was dropped and replaced by the Kindle 3. It’s hardly definitive of course, there are other reasons why Amazon might be looking to reduce inventory. However, if you had been thinking about getting yourself a Kindle reader, then hanging on for three or four weeks, just to see how things pan out, might not be a bad idea right now.
On the other hand, the Kindle 3 is an excellent reader – that’s why it is the current market leader. You might decide that getting hold of a Kindle 3 for less than $100 – refurbished Wi-Fi Kindles are currently selling for just $ 99.99 – is too big a bargain to pass up. As a rule, “refurbished” means that it’s a Kindle which has been unwanted for some reason. They are normally returned pretty much unused and are, to coin a phrase, “as good as new”. If you were unlucky enough to receive one which was damaged, scuffed or worn in any way, you could always return it to Amazon of course.
